Rerum Novarum and the New Things of Our Time

The election of Pope Leo XIV has stirred hearts around the world with hope and expectation. His choice of name appears to be no accident. By taking the name of Pope Leo XIII, who authored the landmark social encyclical Rerum Novarum in 1891, Pope Leo XIV signals a renewed commitment to the Church’s teachings on justice, work, human dignity, and the common good.

Rerum Novarum—Latin for “Of New Things”—was a response to the challenges of the Industrial Revolution. Today, we face our own “new things”: artificial intelligence, automation, digital surveillance, and a changing global economy. As we stand on the threshold of yet another social transformation, the Church once again offers timeless wisdom to guide our response.

For the next six Sundays, this bulletin series will briefly explore the core teachings of Rerum Novarum and apply them to our present moment. As Pope Leo XIV begins his pontificate, let us reflect on how Catholic social teaching can help us build a just and humane future in the midst of technological evolution.

In Christ,

Fr. Freitag

Pastor

P.S. Rerum Novarum is downloadable at many sites. The original can be found at: https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiii/en/encyclicals.index.html

Part I of 6: The Catholic Church and the Modern World

Rerum Novarum: Then and Now

In 1891, Pope Leo XIII issued Rerum Novarum, addressing the growing chasm between rich and poor and the rise of new economic ideologies. His message: the Church must not remain silent in the face of injustice. Work is not just about productivity—it is about human dignity.

Today, we confront a new industrial revolution. Artificial intelligence, global data markets, and advanced automation are reshaping our world. These advances bring great promise—but also great risk to workers, families, and communities. Rerum Novarum teaches that progress must be measured by how it serves the human person.

As Pope Leo XIV begins his ministry, he invites us to revisit the wisdom of his namesake—not as a relic of the past, but as a compass for our future.

Reflection Question:

Where do I see modern technologies uplifting or undermining human dignity in my own work or community?

Celebrating 64 Years of Faithful Service

Fr. Lyle’s 64th Anniversary of Ordination

June 29, 1961 – June 29, 2025

We joyfully celebrate Fr. Lyle’s 64 years of devoted priestly ministry. Since his ordination on June 29, 1961, he has been a compassionate guide and a faithful servant of Christ. His unwavering commitment to our parish family has been a true blessing to us all.

Let us give thanks for Fr. Lyle’s remarkable journey of faith. May God continue to bless him with strength, joy, and peace in the years to come.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

– Matthew 25:21

Parish BBQ Celebration at Sacred Heart of Jesus – Sunday, June 29

Come celebrate with us at our Parish BBQ at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church as we honor three special occasions in our parish community:

  • – Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (June 27)
  • – Feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (June 27)
  • – Fr. Lyle’s 64th Anniversary of Ordination (June 29, 1961)

Join us on Sunday, June 29, following the 10-11AM Mass for food, fellowship, and fun! The BBQ will be lovingly hosted by Sacred Heart of Jesus volunteers, and all are welcome.

Mass Time Change – Sacred Heart of Jesus

Starting Sunday, July 6th, the Sunday evening Mass at 5:30 PM will move to 5:00 PM.

This change is being made to better manoeuver high traffic times caused by events at the Climate Pledge Arena.

Please mark your calendars and spread the word! Thank you for your understanding and continued participation in our parish family life.

Traffic Advisory – Sunday Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus

Please be aware of increased traffic near the Seattle Center on Sunday, June 22, due to a free public event at the International Fountain Mall.

  • – The Seattle Center Hot Air Balloon Glow Up begins at 7:30 PM, which may cause congestion before and especially after Mass as attendees arrive and event traffic builds.
  • – Additionally, Seattle Pride Fest and Pride Parade will take place on Sunday, June 29, which may also lead to significant traffic and limited parking in the area.

If you’re attending Sacred Heart of Jesus Sunday Mass, please allow extra travel time when planning your route.

CANCELLED: Corpus Christi Eucharistic Procession & Adoration

The Corpus Christi Eucharistic Procession and Adoration on Saturday, June 21 has been cancelled. The 5 p.m. Vigil Mass will still be held at St. James Cathedral.

Living Out Hope in Our Families

The family is the domestic church, the first place where faith and hope are nurtured. In the Jubilee Year of Hope, we are reminded that our homes can be sanctuaries of love, forgiveness, and trust in God’s promises. Families face unique challenges in today’s world, but they are also called to be beacons of hope for one another and for the wider community.

The late Pope Francis, in Spes Non Confundit, highlights the importance of hope within the family: “In the family, the daily practice of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation becomes a sign of God’s abiding presence and a source of great hope.” This Jubilee invites families to pray together, reflect on God’s Word, and celebrate the sacraments as a means of fostering hope in their daily lives.

Let us use this holy year to renew our commitment to building homes where hope flourishes, trusting that God’s grace is sufficient for every trial and every blessing.

Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Fatima and St. Anne Parishioners,

June 20th is summer solstice, so I officially wish you a happy summer!

Things have been brimming with activity in my world including crafting next year’s budget (x 3!), preparing for the end of the current fiscal year (x3!), the start of the new fiscal year (x3!), improving tracking the shared family expenses, keeping tabs on the ACA, and overseeing the hiring process of the new communication and development role to name a few.

At all three parishes we could really use some more cash counters. This is a very important role and volunteers are crucial for this important step in stewarding a parish’s finances. Please reach out to the parish office if you are interested to learn more. Thank you for considering it!

I have some financial updates and sneak peaks to share with you this month – there will more detailed updates with you this fall through the Parish Annual Report.

God bless,

Brigid

Let's reach our participation goals!

We are grateful to share that two of our three parishes have reached their financial goals—a true testament to your generosity and stewardship. Thank you for your faithful support.

However, as a parish family, we are still striving to meet our participation goals.

Our Lady of Fatima has met its financial goal, with 28% participation toward our 30% goal. It would be wonderful to achieve both goals! At this point, any additional contributions will return to the parish to assist with boiler repairs. Learn more about the ACA at Our lady of Fatima.

Sacred Heart of Jesus has reached its financial goal and has a 15% participation rate, while our goal for the year is 20%. It’s not too late to participate—rebate funds will support the installation of altar railings. Learn more about the ACA at Sacred Heart of Jesus.

St. Anne is still working toward its financial goal, having reached 53% of the required amount and 23% of our 38% participation goal. If you haven’t yet participated, please prayerfully consider supporting this important cause. Learn more about the ACA at St. Anne.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone in our parish family who has contributed so far. Your generosity supports ministries across Western Washington and helps fund vital rebate projects within our parishes.
