Parish Mission

We are blessed to welcome Fr. Dominic Briese, O.P. for our Parish Family Lenten Mission.

March 9 -11

6:30 to 8:30 PM at St. Anne

Fr. Briese will be at weekend Masses March 7 and 8. Each weeknight will begin with Mass and include a talk on the following topics.

Monday: Baptism and Confirmation — “Washed in Grace, Welcomed in Love.” What does it mean to be welcomed into Christ and into one another?

Tuesday: Reconciliation and Healing — “Reconciling with Christ, Rebuilding Community.” How do we heal past hurts and renew authentic friendship?

Wednesday: Eucharist — “The Infinite Table: One Bread, Every Era, All People.” Celebrating authentic community in the Eucharist.

Originally from Long Island, New York, Fr. Dominic Briese moved to Utah after high school and earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Utah. He was ordained a priest in 1996 at St. Dominic’s Church in San Francisco. Over the past 29 years, Fr. Dominic has served the people of God in many roles, including pastor and Newman Center director in Phoenix, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Benicia, California. He spent five years preaching retreats throughout the United States and abroad. In addition, he has taught Theology at Judge Memorial Catholic High School and both Theology and Ancient Civilization at Juan Diego Catholic High School, while assisting at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Kearns, Utah. Most recently, he served as pastor of St. Martin de Porres Parish in Taylorsville, Utah, for five years. He now resides in Seattle as the Prior of the Dominican community at Blessed Sacrament Priory. Bach Stations of the Cross

Charlie Hiestand, music director at St. Anne, describes the inspiration behind the Stations of the Cross on March 6th.

“Bach, as all Baroque composers, attempted to express a single emotion with each piece. The Well-Tempered Clavier is a collection in two books of 96 different pieces, four in each key. It was revolutionary for its time and is still revered by pianists, organists, and composers.

The idea of doing a Stations of the Cross with Bach’s music acting as the commentary came from the famous fugue in C# minor from the first book. Tradition has it that the theme is in the shape of a cross and so it is often played on Good Friday. It is also one of the most emotional pieces of music I know, while simultaneously being one of the most intellectual. It wasn’t hard to go through the books and find other pieces suitable for the other stations.

The result is more of a concert than a traditional stations, but for this pianist it is a work of devotion and prayer. Your listening is your participation in the prayer.”

Spotlight on the Schools

Our parish schools have been busy! In February they celebrated 100 days of school and danced the night away at Father-Daughter dances. The 8th grade girls CYO basketball was a combined team with players from Our Lady of Fatima and St. Anne. They came in 2nd Place in the playoffs! The St. Anne Lower School Drama (grades 2-4) did an unbelievable job in their performance of “How to Hug a Cactus?”, a musical all about friendship, understanding, and celebrating what makes each of us unique. Beautiful things can happen when we lead with kindness. Our Lady of Fatima will soon present the musical “The Addams Family: Young@Part” on March 19-21, which tells the story of when Wednesday brings her very normal, un-Addams boyfriend and his family home for dinner. Kooky antics and hilarious relationship challenges ensue, secrets are exposed, and the Addamses are forced to face something they’ve always avoided: change.

The full schedules at both schools take pause to focus on the grounding of our Catholic faith during this Lenten season. Each class engages in Lenten prayer and fasting through grade-appropriate activities. For example, at OLF, first grade does daily reflection on their “Walking with Jesus” worksheet. Coloring in one of the stones on the path, the color reflecting how they walked with Jesus in the last 24 hrs. The colors are purple for prayer, red for sacrifice, green for helpful, or yellow for kindness. Once filled out they share what they did within the last 24 hrs to grow closer to Jesus. At St. Anne, sixth through eighth grade are participating in the Free Rice Initiative. For every question or problem students answer correctly in the program, UN sponsors and partners donate the equivalent of 10 grains of rice to help fight world hunger, supporting countries such as Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Sudan, and Chad. Our goal as a school is to donate at least one million grains of rice by the end of Lent. In addition, they participate in Lenten Prayer assemblies and students in grades 3-8 will have the opportunity to receive the sacrament of Confession.

Both schools welcome parishioners to their Good Friday Stations of the Cross:

–St. Anne: The 8th grade class, in partnership with the 5th graders, will lead the Stations of the Cross in the church at 2:15pm followed by a silent exit from school.

–Our Lady of Fatima: The 8th grade class will lead Stations of the Cross at 11:15am in the gym.
