Parish Life

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

As spring arrives and the first green shoots emerge, daffodils paint nature with vibrant hues. Cherry trees and magnolias open their blossoms, turning streets and parks into clouds of pink flowers. We find ourselves doing something we thought we had forgotten: we marvel. We marvel like children, for whom each day brings new discoveries, and a simple walk can become an expedition.

I am also amazed, not only by the blooming trees during the drive from one of our parishes to another, but even more by the people I meet when I arrive. Sacristans, altar servers, and lectors who participate in the Holy Mass. Members from three choirs who come together and rehearse to musically accompany the Triduum. All the wonderful volunteers in our ministries, whom I encounter daily. Children being prepared for their First Holy Communion, home visits for the sick and elderly, and sandwiches for the homeless, all done by volunteers, just to name a few.

Let’s not forget the rather silent parishioners, who may not be seen themselves, and who may not get their hands busy, but fold their hands and pray for us, or reach into their pockets and donate for our causes.

Flowers are blooming everywhere, literally thanks to generous donations for Easter Mass decorations, and figuratively as everyone contributes to make our parish family flourish.

I marvel when I see all this. Flowers blooming in our community, in our human souls, and then I am a child again. A child of God.

May we never lose our sense of wonder about God’s creation.

In Christ,

Barbara Bumbarger

Part 5 of 5: Confession Prepares Us for the Joy of Easter

After journeying through repentance, forgiveness, healing, and growth, we arrive at the goal of Lent: the joy of Easter! But to fully embrace this joy, we must first experience the renewal that comes through reconciliation with God.

Easter is about resurrection—Jesus’ victory over sin and death. When we go to confession, we share in this victory. Just as Jesus rose from the tomb, we rise from sin, renewed and restored by His grace. Confession is like a personal resurrection, where Jesus lifts us up and gives us new life.

The Church encourages us to confess during Lent so that our hearts will be prepared for Easter. There is no greater way to celebrate Christ’s resurrection than with a soul made new by His mercy.

Moreover, regular confession deepens our participation in the Eucharist. St. Paul reminds us to receive the Body and Blood of Christ worthily (1 Corinthians 11:27-29). When we confess our sins, we approach the altar with clean hearts, ready to receive Jesus with love and gratitude.

This Lent do not let fear or hesitation keep you from the joy of God’s mercy. Step into the confessional with trust, knowing that Jesus is waiting to forgive, heal, and renew you. Then, on Easter morning, you will rejoice with a heart truly transformed, ready to embrace the fullness of Christ’s victory!
