Parish Life

“Be still my heart,

the trees are praying.

I said to the tree:

Tell me about God.

And it blossomed.”

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), Indian poet and philosopher

Dear Parishioners, dear Friends,

Isn’t it wonderful how we can speak of God and the triumph of life in such charming ways?

This week, our parish family is blossoming with some beautiful events and milestones:

  • – The Parish Family Advisory Council (PFAC) has been officially formed. Fr. Freitag’s letter (in this bulletin) has all the details, so be sure to check it out!
  • – We are celebrating Flores de Mayo, and the Fil-Am Community is doing an amazing job, as always!
  • – Joe Cotton from the Office of the Vicar General will be our witness speaker at all three church locations. This will kick off a rotation of speakers during the time of the Annual     Catholic Appeal (ACA).
  • – All three parishes are joyfully celebrating First Communion this month.
  • – Our school students are engaged in so many wonderful activities. Take a moment to see what they’ve been up to!

Thank you for being a part of our vibrant community. Your involvement and support make all the difference.

In Christ,

Barbara Bumbarger

Third Sunday of Easter: Breakfast with the Risen Lord

“Come, have breakfast.” — John 21:12

After a long night of fruitless labor, the disciples return to shore weary and empty-handed—until the risen Jesus appears. He stands on the shore, unknown at first, then unmistakable. He tells them where to cast their nets. He prepares a meal. He restores Peter with a threefold question: “Do you love me?”

This moment is tender and personal. The risen Christ doesn’t only appear in glory—He cooks breakfast. He meets us in our fatigue. He speaks gently to our failure. And He renews our purpose.

In this Jubilee Year of Hope, we are reminded: Jesus doesn’t wait for us to succeed before He calls us. He meets us in the ordinary, forgives our denials, and entrusts us again with His mission.

Pope Francis says, “With the Resurrection, Jesus is not a memory from the past, but a presence in the present.” His presence nourishes us, body and soul. Like Peter, we are invited to renew our love. Like the disciples, we are called to recognize Him—not in grand signs, but in humble gestures of daily grace.

The Risen Lord says, “Follow me.” May we do so with renewed trust, strengthened by Jesus’ mercy, and confident in the hope that He is with us always—even on the shores of our everyday lives.

Newly formed Parish Family Advisory Council

Dear Parish Family,

The Lord is Risen, Alleluia, Alleluia! He has Risen indeed, Alleluia, Alleluia!

As we continue our Easter celebration, it is with great joy that I announce the appointment of twelve members to our newly formed Parish Family Advisory Council (PFAC). This significant step in our journey through the Partners in the Gospel initiative reflects our shared commitment to strengthening our mission and embracing the opportunities ahead as a united parish family.

After a prayerful and thoughtful selection process, we have appointed a diverse and dedicated group of individuals to serve on the PFAC for a three-year term. These twelve members represent a healthy cross mix from our three parishes—Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Fatima, and St. Anne—bringing with them the unique gifts, perspectives, and traditions of our vibrant communities. They include devoted and faith-filled parishioners who are eager to foster collaboration and guide us as we transition into this new model of shared ministry. The members are as follows:

Sacred Heart of Jesus Our Lady of Fatima St. Anne

Micheline Lubin

Nirmal Benann

Rose Tandtanud

Fr. Lyle Konen

Bob Dela-Cruz

Carrie Steen

Alice Shepard

Quentin Orem

John Campion

Carmen Suazo

Javier Taylor

Susie Fritzky

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in the nomination process. We received just over 100 nominees for consideration, a testament to the depth of faith and engagement within our parish family. Thank you for taking the time to nominate individuals you think would serve this role with dedication and wisdom. Your involvement has been invaluable in shaping the council that will help lead us forward.

As outlined earlier this year, the PFAC will serve as an advisory body to me, your pastor, and to our Parish Family Leadership Team (PFLT). Its purpose is to foster open communication, provide feedback on integrating our ministries and resources, and ensure that the richness of each parish is celebrated while working toward a unified mission. The council will address challenges and opportunities during this transition, helping to make it as smooth and prayerful as possible.

The PFAC will begin its work with an initial orientation and planning session in late Spring. Regular meetings will follow, including time for prayer, discussion, and discerning the will of God for our parish family. Over the next three years, we will be looking at who we are, who we hope to become, and how we will arrive there, following the guidance from the Partners in the Gospel initiative.

Your continued prayers and support are essential as the PFAC embarks on this important undertaking. Over the coming months and years, I invite you to share your thoughts, concerns, and hopes with the council members. Together, as one family of faith, we will continue to grow in love, unity, and service to the mission of our Jesus Christ to go forth and proclaim the Gospel to all the world.

Faithfully yours,

Fr. Freitag

Pastor

Annual Catholic Appeal

Archbishop Etienne: “Together in Faith”

The Annual Catholic Appeal funds ministries and services for your local Catholic community – including your neighbors and parish. Your contributions secure the future of the local Church by supporting Catholic education, CYO camps, faith formation and guidance and training for our seminarians, clergy, and lay leaders. Your donation also funds shared services directly supporting your parish.

How do I participate?

While we are a parish family, each of the parishes has their own ACA goal and rebate project. You can participate by either filling out an envelope (mailed out as well as in the pews) or by visiting: archseattle.org/giveaca.

When donating, please select the parish you want to credit with your ACA donation and your contribution will count towards your parish’s goal.

Choose St. Anne Parish – 15 – Seattle  This way you will support the St. Anne rebate project: ROOF REPAIRS! Last year’s rebate in addition to this year’s rebate will be going towards roof repairs. Learn more about St. Anne’s ACA and our goal for that parish here.

Choose Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish – 13 – Seattle  This way you will support the Sacred Heart of Jesus rebate project: RAILINGS WITHIN THE SANCTUARY! This year, the rebate money will help with the installation of railings within the sanctuary. This will help ensuring the Redemptorists and other presiding priests have the support they need while moving
around the sanctuary. Learn more about Sacred Heart of Jesus’ ACA and our goal for that parish.

Choose Our Lady of Fatima Parish – 8 – Seattle   This way you will support the Our Lady of Fatima rebate project: BOILER REPAIR! This year, the rebate money will be to recoup the
ongoing expenses associated to the boiler repair. It is a $50,000+ bill and unfortunately still not fully repaired. Learn more about Our Lady of Fatima’s ACA and our goal for that parish.

Sacred Heart of Jesus: Mass will be held on Sunday, May 4th, at 10 AM.

Our Lady of Fatima: Mass will be held on Saturday, May 10th, at 10 AM.

St. Anne: Mass will be held on Sunday, May 4th, at 11 AM.

Flores de Mayo

The annual Flores de Mayo celebration will be on Sunday, May 4th, at the 9:00AM Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church.

Prior to the Mass, there will be a procession starting at 8:50AM from the school parking lot, followed with the crowning of the statue of Our Blessed Mother Mary. Flores de Mayo is a Philippine celebration where we show our love and devotion to Mother Mary by offering flowers to her statue. We encourage all the members of the Northwest Seattle Catholic Parish Family, especially families with small children, to participate.

After Mass, there will be Philippine foods, entertainment, and prizes in Our Lady of Fatima Parish Social Center. All are invited to attend. If possible, please bring a dessert to share with all of us. Flores de Mayo is sponsored by the Filipino American Society in Magnolia. This year marks the 47th anniversary of the founding of the Filipino American Society in Magnolia.

Become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion!

Are you interested in becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion or looking to refresh your skills?

We warmly invite you to join us for a training session on Tuesday, May 13, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with our community, deepen your understanding, and enhance your service. Whether you’re new or experienced, your presence is valued and appreciated. We look forward to seeing you there!

Blood Donation

There’s lifesaving power in all of us. By donating blood, you’re helping patients needing blood transfusions for challenging procedures and treatments. Blood transfusions are one of the most common procedures in hospitals and volunteer blood donors are the only source. Will you SPRING into action and help ensure an ample blood supply for our community?

Our Lady of Fatima (3218 W. Barrett St) is hosting a blood drive in the parish center. It will be held on Monday May 5. Please sign up to reserve your time slot!

Appointments are required. If you need help booking an appointment, please call 1-800-398-7888 or e-mail schedule@bloodworksnw.org

Friendly reminders to hydrate well and eat a meal prior to giving blood and bring photo ID. Please consider eating foods rich in iron leading up to blood donation day.
