Simbang Gabi

Simbang Gabi, translated as “evening Mass,” is the Filipino spiritual tradition of a novena (nine days) of Masses before Christmas. Since the 1600s, the Filipinos have spent these final days of Advent in the company of Mary to prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Simbang Gabi expresses our love for God. The readings, prayers, and songs remind us to reflect on our personal and communal relationships with our Lord at this special time of the year. Filipino Americans brought Simbang Gabi to the United States and found it an effective way to build a community of faith, to express who they are as a people, and to share their religious tradition and culture with fellow parishioners. Simbang Gabi transcends cultural boundaries and helps us focus on the meaning of the season amidst the flurry of holiday activities.

Our parish family will host one of the Simbang Gabi masses. Come and join us for this celebration that will feature the Procession of Parols and the Filipino Choir!

–St. Vincent de Paul

Outreach to the Homeless: Our Vincentians recently hosted a holiday gathering at the tiny homes village under the Magnolia Bridge, welcoming more than 40 residents for hot chocolate, coffee, and conversation. An Update from Your Parish Family Advisory Council (PFAC)

The Parish Family Advisory Council of Northwest Seattle Catholic meets on the first Saturday of each month, which started in September of this year. We are grateful for the regular presence of Deacon Greg McNabb, who serves as our Parish Family Liaison to the Archdiocese, as well as the rotating participation of parish and school staff at each meeting.

At this stage, the PFAC remains focused on studying, learning, and forming shared understanding in order to develop a strong foundation for the collaborative work ahead. Our meetings rotate among our three parish communities. Following each session, we have participated in guided tours of the parish campuses, including churches, buildings, and schools, to better understand the unique gifts and needs of each site. As part of our formation, PFAC members have been reading and discussing What Does God Want? by Michael Scanlan, using it to guide discussion and spiritual grounding.

In October, PFAC members, Fr. Freitag, and key parish staff took part in a regional Archdiocesan training on Personal and Communal Spiritual Discernment, held at Vietnamese Martyrs Parish. As our parish family continues discussing and approaching key decisions about becoming one canonical parish, it will be essential that our discernment comes from a place of deep listening and respect for all voices. Growing in trust, rooted in faith, and guided by the Holy Spirit will help ensure that our decisions truly serve the good of our unified community.

We put our discernment training to work this fall. The PFAC hosted listening sessions at each of our three parishes seeking to understand “What Are Our Gifts?”. These sessions helped us better recognize the unique gifts and charisms present in each parish community, as well as the many ways parishioners have been drawn closer to God through their various parish experiences. We are grateful to everyone who attended! We will be holding another round of listening sessions in early 2026–stay tuned!

We look forward to continuing this journey of collaboration, unity, and mission as we serve the Northwest Seattle Catholic parish family.
