Martha’s Workers
Tackling Hunger 200 Sandwiches at a Time
Visit St. Anne’s assembly room any Monday morning and you’ll likely see a group of dedicated women, school kids and an occasional man working an assembly line of sandwiches.

It’s Martha’s Workers striking a blow against hunger with tuna fish, egg salad and ham and cheese. And they really work, turning out 200 sandwiches in just under half an hour for the Family and Adult Service Center.

The group also does a Christmas dinner for the homeless, feeding some 300 guests, and a monthly spaghetti dinner for the service center. School moms provide home-baked cookies for the Wednesday dinner.

Donations whenever possible
Food comes from a variety of sources,” says Nancy Moriarty, who chairs Martha’s Workers with Connie Lamb. “We try to get as much donated as possible. Local stores help when they can and parishioners also donate cash and food. Some stores will also give me a discount if they can’t donate the food,” Nancy says.

The monthly spaghetti dinner is a finely tuned machine. The huge mount of needed pasta is prepared by Kenny Moriarty’s catering service and brought back to the school kitchen where the sauce and salads or vegetables are prepared. Then Dale Dankers, Jerry Killion and Pat Gowan serve the meal at the center. Nancy picks the men up when dinner is over.

Hunger is a world-wide problem and our area is no exception. Martha’s Workers does what it can. If you can’t volunteer, think about donating a ham or other sandwich ingredients. “Money and food are always welcome,” Nancy says.
